How Important is Your Credit Score?
Have you ever been in a
situation where you're applying for a loan or credit card and you're turned down because of bad credit? It's humiliating because they are
saying in essence, "we can't take the risk with you because you're not trust
worthy". It doesn't make good business sense to invest in someone if they
have not been able to faithfully repay past debts. I have been embarking on the
difficult task of paying off all debt. But it's a slow process that requires
much discipline. As my financial advisor put it "you must put yourself in
financial prison".
What if God's decision to put a deposit of grace into our spiritual bank account was based on our past? Or even based on the present? What if He said "hmmm, I can see from the past you've refused to forgive others, have never helped the poor, have never gone to the church, have cursed, have stolen..." (the list goes on), "and now you come to Me for a grace Loan? Really? Get out of My presence". Or what if He agreed to help us but only with a promissory note because of what a huge liability we are?
Undoubtedly, we would have filed bankruptcy several times. If God is looking for perfect spiritual credit... we wouldn't have a prayer! So what do we do? We come to Him, poor in spirit, nothing to offer - like the prodigal son - as His child ready to be His servant. (See the Father's response to that, read the story in Luke 15:11-22).
Understand that Jesus told that parable as a direct reference to the brokenness of anyone who is willing to admit that they have been slopping around with the pigs because of defiance, insisting on doing it their way. Sadly, many will go their entire lives without lifting their head from the disgusting trough of life and say "I will go to my Father and beg for His forgiveness", recognizing and admitting their utter bankruptcy of heart.
Thank God that He waits with open arms, that our dues are wiped off the books by His Son Who said at the time of His execution "tetelestai" (translation: "it is finished" - John 19:30). Our sin debt is literally "paid in full".
