Are You In Good Hands?

The catchy slogan, "you're in good hands with Allstate" accompanies compelling TV ads ending in the familiar, deep voice, asking the penetrating question  "... are you in good hands?" ... pregnant pause.

This same question should punctuate the end of every Bible commentary and every church marquee.

In reality, only those who have placed their lives into the hands of the one true, living God can answer in the affirmative. Notice I said God, not "a god". The first commandment reveals the fact that the world offers a plethora of false gods that promise happiness. These things titillate us continuously and cause us to think "if I only had more money, more sex, a nicer car,  bigger house, better body.." ad infinitum. 

 But the Bible promises blessings for those who believe and trust God alone. One time, a very wealthy young man approached Jesus, asking what he must do to receive eternal life. Knowing that this man had placed all of his hope and faith in his possessions, Jesus challenged him to sell all that he had and follow Him. The young man walked away sad because he couldn't loosen his grip on his riches long enough to grab onto the only true source of assurance. Like many today, he asked the right question, but rejected the answer.

 At some point in time, "men's hearts will fail them for fear of the things which are coming upon the earth" (Luke 21:26), including the "distress of nations". There is a line in the sand and a choice to be made. Over and over again, God offers Living Water to a dying and thirsty world.

"Today I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that God has set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; that you may love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days." Deuteronomy 30:15.


 In midst of uncertainty, you can know and be sure of your future. You can have hope and peace that passes understanding.

 So here's the question at hand: where do you put your trust? 
Are YOU in good hands?

    For me, remaining in good hands means to do my best (falling short everyday, however) to keep my vertical alignment in check.

    My vertical alignment looks like:
    1. My relationship with Jesus - remaining in His word, prayer, serving.
    2. Serving my wife. Being present and placing her above myself.
    3. My daughter, and now her husband, (they are one, after all). Being an example for their marriage.

    There certainly is more. But if we treat others well, keep the love of Christ at the forefront of our daily walk, then I know, for myself, I remain in my Father's hands. From here, nothing or no one can snatch me away.

Never Forget

Have you ever been so grateful for someone that you can't find enough words in our language to express it? I've often thought with tears about the things I would say to my mother now. Things I never made the effort to say. The more I reminisce, the more I'm reminded of her goodness - and the more I regret not telling her so. Nehemiah had been Cupbearer to the Persian King Artaxerxes, and now had been Governor of Judah for twelve years. Overwhelmed with gratitude to God for bringing His people back from captivity, he poured his heart out in prayer.  God allowed them to rebuild their beloved city of Jerusalem, which had been utterly destroyed by the Babylonians seventy years prior. In an amazing 52 days, they had completely rebuilt the city wall. Nehemiah gathered all of the people and for three hours they read about the sins of their fathers and for three more hours, confessed that they had partaken of similar deeds "crying with a loud voice to the Lord their God"

Without a Doubt

Most of us are probably familiar with the infamous story of God's miraculous intervention of freeing Israel from the tyranny of Egypt. Moses appeared before the Pharaoh of Egypt on multiple occasions, demanding each time that he let the Jewish slaves go. We know about Pharaoh's stubborn refusals followed by God's judgements. Fast forward to the mass exodus through the Red Sea. God's promise wasn't just to free the slaves from their bondage, but to lead them into the "Land of Milk and Honey", an area that God had intended to give to them where they could dwell forever under His protection and provision.
